Add me to those recommending the San Juan Capistrano and Santa Barbara destinations. I’d also recommend Los Angeles for a fun day trip as there’s all kind of transit around the area from LA Union Station…gold line to Pasadena, Big Blue Bus to Santa Monica, Metrolink to all kinds of destinations. For a longer trip you might consider the overnight trip to Portland Oregon or Seattle Washington. Leave San Diego at around 6:30 am to Los Angeles, then transfer to a train going up the coast for fantastic views. By the time you get to the Bay Area it’s night so not much to see there, but when you wake up the next morning you are in northern CA/southern Oregon in beautiful surroundings. I’m not sure if they still do this, but in southern Oregon they’d have a tour guide board the train in the observation car and point out all kinds of interesting sites as you’d go thru southern Oregon, pointing out waterfalls and telling stories of the history of the area that are very interesting. You can either choose to get off at Portland in the early afternoon, or continue on to Seattle, in which case it pulls in at night.
